OBD is a computer-based system

On-Board Diagnostics, or OBD, is a computer-based system built into modern passenger cars that monitors emission related controls and performance of the engine, and detects malfunctions. OBD-II systems provide access to the health information of a vehicle and access to numerous parameters and sensors from the CAT Caterpillar ET Diagnostic Adapter Control Unit (ECU). The OBD2 system offers valuable information, including diagnostic trouble codes, when troubleshooting problems.

Anthropogenic threats, such as collisions with man-made structures, vehicles, poisoning and predation by domestic pets, combine to kill billions of wildlife annually. ThisĀ Caterpillar Diagnostic Tool is what you should use if you will be hooking up to both off-highway & on-highway CAT engines. If you are strictly wanting to work on on-highway CAT engines, I would rather see you purchase a Nexiq USB Link .The Nexiq USB Link is universal (Works with CAT, Cummins, Detroit, Allison, etc…), it is cheaper, plus it has bluetooth so you can go wireless.

The same goes for accessing many OBD II diagnostic features such as history codes, snapshot data, and special diagnostic test modes that require two-way communication and special scan tool software. For example, some of the OBD II diagnostic features that are currently accessible with an OEM factory scan tool are not yet available on aftermarket scan tools. This may limit your ability to diagnose and repair certain types of problems.
